The sea of particle pairs fizzed and churned, a universe of perfect balance. For every giving, there was an immediate returning. The net sum of existence was a perfect, and perfectly static, zero. It was a beautiful equation, but it was not a story. For a story to begin, there must be change, and for change to occur, there must be imperfection.
The world-shaper, the universe itself, observed this perfect stasis. And with an act of will that was as subtle as a breath, it introduced a Second Law.
The Second Law was not a grand, sweeping principle like the first. It was a footnote, a tiny addendum. It stated, simply: “The returning need not be immediate.”

And in that breath, the story of the universe could finally, truly begin.
