They did not choose to cooperate. They simply, by chance, drifted into proximity. And in that proximity, both thrived. The first life was no longer poisoned by its own existence, and the second was no longer scorched by the unfiltered light. They had stumbled into the first alliance.
It was the first instance of symbiosis, a relationship where the giving and the returning were not sequential, but simultaneous. It was a new kind of ’we’, not conscious or deliberate, but a ’we’ of mutual benefit, a ’we’ of intertwined survival.
