Cosmos Ch1038: The First Signal — 307th Echo

One of the outer cells, when struck by a particularly intense burst of sunlight, underwent a slight chemical change. It released a tiny puff of a specific molecule as a byproduct. This molecule drifted through the organism’s internal environment and, by pure chance, it happened to fit perfectly into a receptor on the surface of one of the inner, energy-storing cells.
This connection triggered a response in the inner cell. It released a small amount of its stored energy, making it available to the rest of the community.…
