Some of the cells in the growing colony were not specialized for light-gathering or energy storage. Through the endless, random shuffling of life’s code, they had developed a different talent. They could contract.
By chance, some of these contractile cells were located near the cells that received the first chemical signals. When the signal for “intense light” arrived and energy was released, these contractile cells used that burst of fuel to tighten.…
