In a world of predators and prey, the ability to sense the environment became a matter of life and death. The simple light-sensitive patch that had guided the first movements was no longer enough. The universe was about to invent sight.
On the skin of a small, hunted creature, a mutation occurred. The patch of light-sensitive cells, by a random folding of its flesh, sank into a shallow pit.
This tiny change had a profound consequence. A flat patch could only detect the presence or absence of light. But the pit could detect its direction. Light coming from one side would illuminate one wall of the pit, while light from the other side would illuminate the other.…
