The ripple from the first stone was still expanding, its influence fading as it spread. Before it vanished entirely, the First Character chose another stone.
This one was different from the first. It was flatter, with a sharper edge, a silence that felt more defined. The character held it, not for as long as the first, but with a more specific intent.
It landed in a different part of the stream, closer to the bank. The plunk was higher in pitch, the ripple it created a tighter, faster pattern. For a moment, two patterns of consequence existed on the stream’s surface simultaneously.
