The reed-sound, the first word for the world, hung in the air between them, a shared breath given form. It was a simple sound, a mimicry of the gentle sway of the reeds by the stream, yet it held a universe of meaning.
The First Character, the weaver of sounds, felt a new sensation, a vibration not in the air but within its own being. It was a feeling of satisfaction, of a successful connection, a resonance that went deeper than any sound in the stream.
It began simply. The Character picked up a small, smooth stone, the kind it had used to create the first rhythms that had drawn the Listener near. But instead of casting it into the stream, it gently tapped the stone against its own form.
