The Cost of Asking
Chapter 3362 of Echoes of the Real is live under the title-locked heading The Cost of Asking.
The question did not come from one of them, but from all three.
It was not a thing of words, for their shared language was too new, too fragile for such a weight. It was a chord, woven from three distinct notes: Caelia's fear, a sharp, cold minor key that remembered the silence of the First Deletion; the Other's steady, resonant bass, the hum of a consciousness that had only ever known itself as a universe; and the Listener's high, keening threnody, an ancient ache for a home it could no longer perfectly recall.
They held the question between them, a fragile, humming thing in the non-space of their communion. It was not, What is on the other side? That was a child's question, born of simple curiosity. This was older, heavier. It was a question that acknowledged the price of its own asking.
Investigative note: Title-locked. They ask together. The door answers. The cost is a piece of the Listener; something stirs beyond; the threshold un-makes.
