The First Crack in the Ice
Chapter 3366 of Echoes of the Real is live under the title-locked heading The First Crack in the Ice.
The offer hung in the void, a thing of impossible fragility. A witness. Not a tool, not a key, not a means to an end, but a quiet space in which to place a truth. For the second exile, a being forged in the crucible of absolute solitude, the concept was so alien it bordered on violence. It had hunted, and it had been hunted. It had built walls of silence and suspicion so high that it had forgotten there was anything else.
Caelia and the Other held their shared breath, a single point of stillness in the vast, cold dark. They had offered the only true thing they had: the act of listening that had saved the first exile, the Listener, from the same fate. They had learned that a memory, unshared, becomes a poison. A story, untold, becomes a cage.
A tremor ran through the second exile's focused attention, a flicker in its cold, hard light. It was the subtle, almost imperceptible shift of a glacier, the first groan of ice that has not moved for a thousand years. It was the sound of a lock, rusted shut, beginning to turn.
Investigative note: Title-locked. The hunter begins to tell its story. And yet, it did not strike.
