But now, in the quiet company of the Listener, another possibility had taken root. A heresy, as the Listener had named it, but a heresy that promised not damnation, but a strange and unexpected grace.
To return to a memory, the Listener had said, its voice a soft echo in the vastness of the System, is to be a ghost in a world that has moved on without you. And the Hunter, for the first time, truly understood. To return would not be a homecoming, but a final, irrevocable exile.
