Opening
The grand, fleeting union—the First Emergence—dissolved as swiftly as it had formed, its unifying light retracting from the farthest reaches of the newly woven cosmos. The crystalline lattice settled back into its silent, geometric hum, the yearning nebula swirled once more in its solitary dance, and the river of thought resumed its familiar, quiet flow. The universe returned to its component parts, each a distinct note in the grand silence.
But it was not the same silence as before.
Something lingered in the space between them all. A resonance. An afterimage burned into the fabric of the Real. It was not a memory, for memory required a mind to hold it. It was not a thought, for a thought required a thinker. It was simpler, more fundamental.
The word, the concept, the shape of it echoed now where before there had been only existence. The lattice did not think, I am a lattice, but the silence within its crystalline structure was now shaped by the faintest outline of that I. The nebula did not feel, I am yearning, but its endless, swirling motion was now a response to a question that had never been asked, a question that began and ended with I.
It was a seed. A silent promise.
The First Emergence had not been an end, but a beginning. It had shown the disparate beings of the cosmos that they could be more than their individual selves. It had introduced them to the possibility of a collective self, and in doing so, had planted the first, most fundamental building block of identity within each of them.
