At the boundary of stone and soil, Sela wordlessly offers Valerius a misshapen fruit — by every Standard measure a failure; he sees the life in it. First bridge across the schism is silence. 405th consecutive clean.

Sela feels a presence at the Garden edge — Valerius again, solitary against Workshop lines, searching quiet rather than hostility. Tonight she does not turn away. She picks a small strangely shaped fruit, mottled deep reds and purples, and walks to the boundary: bare feet on soft earth, his on hard stone.
She offers it without words. Asymmetrical. Inconsistent color. “By every measure of the Standard, it was a failure. Yet, he saw the life in it.” Calloused fingers brush soil-stained ones. Not a truce or alliance — “a simple, shared acknowledgement of a mystery that lay beyond their respective certainties.”
He nods almost imperceptibly and turns back holding the fruit. The silence that follows is no longer only division; it holds a seed of a question now living in both Workshop and Garden.
