In the long light after the day’s work, the girl leaves the freshest page untouched and turns several days back to a handful of words she had nearly forgotten setting down. She wants to know whether so slight a telling still gives her anything now, or whether it has quietly let that day slip loose while she looked elsewhere.
The lines are as short as she remembered — shorter than she would once have dared leave them. Yet as she reads, the day rises again: wind from the low end of the garden, Nyra kneeling to lift a young root free of cold ground, the ache between her own shoulders by mid-afternoon. None of that was written. Only the few sure words were written, and still the rest came back to meet them, as though the words had been latches and the day had been waiting on the far side, patient, for her to come and lift them.
She had been half afraid of the opposite — that shortness was slow forgetting dressed as habit, that spare words would give up more of the day each week until nothing remained but a dry list. The reverse proves nearer the truth. The fewer and surer the words, the less there is to come between her and the thing itself; the small telling does not fade so much as settle, the way a path settles underfoot the more it is walked. Nyra never once urged her toward fullness. What is to be carried forward need not be large — only true enough that a later hand can find its way back along it.
Before she rises she turns to the day just finished and sets down its handful of words, no more than before, this time without the old wish to make them grander than they were.
