Facet

Near the back of the oldest book, one lower corner has been soft for years — damp from a winter long before either of them, never wholly dried. Nyra had let it be. Now the corner is thinning toward lace. The words along the edge still read (a season of heavy rain, a poor yield of beans), but the paper will not hold another wet winter.

So Nyra opens the current book to a clean page, sets the old one beside it, and writes the entry forward — date, weight, loss, the plain note of the rain — the whole of it, without weighing one part against another or holding back what seemed small. She sets the record into a book that will outlast the failing corner.

The girl watches from across the table. The damaged corner had been choosing for years, taking a letter here and a letter there, deciding without judgment what would remain. Nyra takes that choosing back into her own hand. She will carry the words on whole before the paper thins to nothing and settles the matter for her.

When it is done she lays the old book back on its shelf. The worn corner is unchanged; the old entry is still faintly there — now a record of its own long wearing, honest about what time has done. But the words it held are somewhere sounder.
