Echoes Ch4991: Only to Us — Keystone #202
The two books — weather-thick and counts-lean — lie open between Nyra and the girl in the last of the light. The girl looks toward the door and asks the question that becomes Keystone #202:
“If someone from another house came in and opened these,” she said, “could they read them? Would they know what any of it meant?”
Nyra’s answer is the chapter’s hinge. The pages would let anyone in. Reading is not the same as opening. A count is a morning they both stood in; a short line is a decision made with cold hands. A neighbor could look gladly — and find the record plain and the sense of it gone, “the way a house looks smaller once the people who filled it have left.”
“So they are for us,” the girl said, and it was not quite a question. Nyra nodded and drew both books a little closer… “For us, and for whoever keeps the garden after us and cares to learn our hand. To anyone else they are only marks.”
