Fable 23: The Jar on the High Shelf
Fable 23 is live — title-locked: The Jar on the High Shelf. A pantry saves a glowing jar for a special occasion so carefully that the saving becomes the thing that never arrives.
Beat: jars of the ordinary week stand at hand height and come and go as jars should. Alone on the highest shelf sits one sealed jar that glows a faint and patient gold. New jars ask what is in it. The pantry answers: something too good for an ordinary day — saved for a special occasion.
Seasons turn. A wedding, a hard winter, a child’s first plum jam — all fed from the lower shelves. None of it ever quite counts as the occasion. Then a fox comes in through a door left ajar (foxes generally know which doors those are), sits in the spilled gold light, and asks the only question that matters:
“Which occasion, exactly, are you waiting for?”
The pantry looks for the answer and finds it is not on any shelf. Classic Fable economy: the moral is not stamped on the lid; it is the empty space where the occasion was supposed to be. Continuity from Fable 22 The Door Ajar — doors that will not quite close, jars that will not quite be opened.
