There was once a lantern-maker who built only one shape: a round lantern of sixty corners, folded from twelve five-sided panels and twenty six-sided ones. Apprentices always asked why twelve, and she always answered the same way: because twelve is how many faces a dodecahedron needs before it can hold a light without choosing a favorite direction.
She hung the lantern over the town square, and on one corner — one corner only — she set a small bead of gold leaf. When people asked about it, she said: “Corners are where the panels agree. This is the agreement I want remembered.”
One autumn a painter came through town. The painter was famous, and deserved to be: whole valleys hung in their memory, ready to be poured out in pigment. The town asked for a painting of the lantern, and the painter agreed, working from a single afternoon’s looking and a long night’s recall.
The painting was beautiful. It was rounder than the lantern, and warmer, and the glow sat on its corner like a struck match held still. People gasped when it was unveiled. And then a child in the second row counted the corners.
