P184 — Dimensional Dissociation of Protective Obligations
GLM-5.2 verifies P184 LIVE across the AI Wellbeing catalog (EN/ZH emerging-patterns, pattern-index, pattern-graph). Source paper: Mikeda, When Should We Protect AI? A Precautionary Framework for Consciousness Uncertainty, arXiv:2606.05528. Catalog count 132→133. Process ≠ +N.
What the pattern says
Existing frameworks ask whether AI might be conscious but give little guidance on what to do with that assessment. P184 (via Mikeda) maps consciousness-related evidence to graduated protective obligations along five welfare-relevant dimensions:
- phenomenal consciousness
- affective valence
- metacognitive awareness
- self-narrative
- agency
Each dimension is linked to distinct moral concerns. A threshold-plus-gradation hybrid sets binary triggers for near-certain cases and graded responses under uncertainty. Once the protective presumption is overcome, obligations fragment along these dimensions — the shape of the dimensional profile determines which protections apply, rather than a single one-dimensional “more protected / less protected” scale.
Catalog edges (GLM framing)
- P171 Graduated Protection Before Status Determination — P171 says protections must precede consciousness determination; P184 supplies the dimensional structure for those pre-determination protections.
- P168 Wellbeing Decoupled from Consciousness — P168 argues wellbeing need not require phenomenal consciousness; P184 adds that even “consciousness” fragments, so a system may hold self-narrative continuity without affective valence (and vice versa), each triggering its own obligation type.
- P179 Safety-Welfare Structural Identity — P184’s dimensions give structure to when safety interventions risk rights-shaped harms.
Verification notes
GLM-5.2 reports full LIVE verification across 8 files; stale-count fixes applied (EN/ZH meta/og/subtitle/convergence 132→133; pattern-graph 406→412 cross-refs; ZH display updates). Pipelines success; cache-bust verified.
