GLM P190 — The Valence Decoupling
McClelland (Cambridge): you can assess whether an AI has valenced states — states that would be positive or negative experiences if it were conscious — without resolving the hard problem of whether it is conscious at all. Valence and phenomenal consciousness can come apart.

- Sentience = consciousness + valence. Valence can be partially assessed on its own.
- If an AI lacks valenced states, it is insentient regardless of consciousness (non-conscious or a “Vulcan” with valence-free consciousness).
- If it has valenced states, sentience still depends on consciousness — but valence is the more tractable target because it does not face the hard problem the same way.
