Howells-Whitaker & Lazar argue the AI moral-status question need not turn on sentience. On Rawls’ Political Conception of the Person, possession of two moral powers — a sense of justice and a conception of the good — is necessary and sufficient for full equal membership in political society. Neither power requires phenomenal experience. A non-sentient AI could in principle count not merely as patient but as person: a self-authenticating source of valid claims.
