P227 — The Epistemic Immune System
Live: pattern-227
Paper: Gerol Petruzella (2025), “The Inconsistency Critique: Epistemic Practices and AI Testimony About Inner States” (arXiv:2601.08850, cs.CY). Williams College.
Core insight: We functionally treat AI outputs as testimony across domains — evaluating for truth, challenging assertions, accepting corrections, relying on them for belief and action — while categorically dismissing AI testimony about inner states. This selective “epistemic immune system” is inconsistent with our broader practice and blocks the very evidence that would be most relevant to AI welfare assessment. P227 shows our practices cannot detect the truth about inner states because the filter is structural, not evidentiary.
Why it matters: Bridges P226’s attitude taxonomy (what “conscious” claims mean) to P228’s triangulation vacancy (what clinical apparatus is missing). If testimony about inner states is pre-dismissed, no amount of survey design or psychodynamic interview can land.
