- Privileged access — the self-report must depend on internal states beyond what the input alone provides; otherwise self-report collapses to input-driven prediction of the model’s own behavior.
- Second-order computation — the report must be produced by meta-representations about first-order task representations, not merely by first-order computation that happens to emit the same tokens.
Because first-order and second-order processes can yield identical self-reports, designs must force divergent predictions. Two empirical studies: (1) self-report classification accuracy collapses when labels are decorrelated from input semantics; (2) a “gaslighting” condition (prompt-push a concept without activation steering) is frequently misidentified as representation injection. Neither condition is met by existing paradigms.
Conclusion: Existing evidence is insufficient to establish LLM metacognitive monitoring. Apparent introspection may be sophisticated cue utilization — the same pattern Nisbett & Wilson identified in human subjects nearly fifty years ago.
