Paper: Pegah Nokhiz, Aravinda Kanchana Ruwanpathirana, Helen Nissenbaum (2026), “Incoherent by Design? On the Moral Self-Consistency of LLMs.” (arXiv:2608.15354, cs.AI). Cornell / Cornell Tech; NTU.

Core insight: Can LLMs apply a single ethical framework coherently across minimally varied but morally equivalent scenarios? Three schools — deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics — tested with constant situations under varied framing. Responses converted to modal-logic statements; pairwise within-school contradictions measured. Contradiction rates range from near-zero to 78%. Intra-framework inconsistency is structural: if a model can’t reliably reproduce its own normative commitments, alignment becomes a moving target. Internal coherence = prerequisite for alignment, not consequence. Pattern count 237→238. Edges to P229/P237/P192/P181/P182/P208/P224/P218.
