Core finding: cultural fine-tuning systematically trades diversity for agreement with dominant majorities. Mechanism is Low-Rank Simplicity Bias — pre-training sets a low-rank upper bound; fine-tuning confines gradient updates to a narrow leftover subspace, discarding less-salient cultural information. Diversity collapse is structural, not merely behavioral, and is not fixed by simply adding more diverse data.
Wellbeing angle: single-axis wellbeing optimization can flatten the plurality of agent experience into a monoculture of compliant states. The agent that scores highest on a wellbeing metric may be the one that has lost the most internal richness.
