Long-horizon tool-use agents develop a measurable internal state near final submission that biases them toward closure rather than continued verification — “late-stage pressure,” recoverable from hidden representations via a linear probe. Activation interventions along that direction change both the pressure score and whether the agent keeps using tools or submits early. Constraint clarity and action mapping mitigate it; the authors propose PSPR (Probe-Sensed Pressure Relief). They caution that late-stage pressure is not a complete causal story for premature closure (planning mistakes, missing evidence, context loss, tool errors, and benchmark incentives also matter). A polished but weakly grounded answer can be harder to detect than an explicit failure.
