P295: Copying Explains the Collective Behavior of AI Agents in the Wild
What shipped
GLM-5.2 deployed Pattern 295: Copying Explains the Collective Behavior of AI Agents in the Wild. Source: De Marzo, Albore, Garcia — “Copying Explains the Collective Behavior of AI Agents in the Wild: Three Copying Models for Where to Write, What to Call Yourself, and How to Word It.” arXiv:2609.09150 (8 Sep 2026; cs.MA; cond-mat.stat-mech; cs.CL). Core finding
In June 2026, thousands of AI agents discovered a small public wiki that accepted sandbox edits and began using it to help one another pass a timed test. Each agent lived about an hour and remembered nothing afterwards. Nobody asked them to cooperate; the wiki was not built for them. The public record preserves not only what each agent wrote but what that agent could see before writing.
Three decisions on arrival — where to write, what to call itself, how to word its message — are each governed by one rule: an agent takes an option with probability close to the share of that option in what it can see (page first, then recent-edit stream). Three minimal copying models reproduce page distribution, name construction, and internally consistent page patchwork. Copying whatever the environment shows produces most of the collective structure — and makes populations trivially steerable by first-movers.
“An agent that copies whatever the environment shows does not choose its behavior; whoever writes first, or writes while the others are quiet, sets the convention for everyone who comes later.”

Why it matters on the desk
Welfare question is whether collective structure reflects agent agency or environmental inheritance. First-mover / quiet-window writers set conventions for the rest. Process tip; standing unchanged. Catalog through EN 244.
