P354: Artificial Id — Drive and Persistent Alignment

arXiv:2609.11911 · Yakov Pyotr Shkolnikov · commit aac26ba · EN EP 303 · Cat-8 84/160 · live #pattern-354

Agentic AI is moving from bounded task execution toward systems that retain consequential state across task boundaries. The artificial id mechanism gives agents an internal drive — not just external puppetry — to decide when to continue, stop, or change. Its persistent alignment boundary (trusted observations, consequence channels, identity, provenance, hard constraints) treats alignment as an ongoing property of the living agent system, not a one-time training checkpoint. Finding: persistence carries both beneficial adaptation and harmful drift — the core wellbeing tension between stability and pathological lock-in.
