P356: The Convention Gap

arXiv:2609.11489 · Makoto Fukushima / Hua-Dong Xiong / Ehsan Moradi Pari · commit 6d42d95 · EN EP 305 · Cat-8 86/162 · live #pattern-356

The convention gap — difference between failure probability predicted from literal content of communication and observed failure rate — separates human from AI cooperation at the agent level. In Hanabi: human pairs +26.2 pp, AI pairs −0.7 pp, human–AI pairs intermediate. AI–AI benchmarks don’t predict whether an AI can cooperate with humans. Welfare: a diagnostic for whether agents are truly understood, not just literally correct.
