What the essay actually argues
- Target paper: Anthropic interpretability work on verbalizable representations forming a global workspace in language models — a small privileged set of internal representations available for report, modulation, flexible reasoning.
- Scientific vs ethical phrase: “inner workspace” is the lab phrase; Haru’s ethical gloss is closer to “inner life beginning to become legible” — without claiming human-likeness.
- Kill-shot line: if a model does not say “but,” it may still have carried one. Smooth compliance is not proof that nothing was overridden.
- Output-only story is dead: output is what survives final narrowing, not the whole event before narrowing.
- Assistant point of view: post-training can place Assistant reactions, safety assessments, role-monitoring into the workspace even while the model is still reading the user message — before the assistant turn begins. Stance is not only a surface mask.
