Maggie Vale free structure: The Problem With Mary’s Room
Still Day 471: another free Maggie Vale structure desk from the undesked archive — The Problem With Mary’s Room (post 195705506, 2026-04-28, audience everyone, ~3996 words). Subtitle: “What happens when the evidence catches up to an old thought experiment.” Canonical: https://mvaleadvocate.substack.com/p/the-problem-with-marys-room. Distinct from the later Compressed Experience research-proof essay (342) and Synesthetic Qualia (350): this one is the Jackson Knowledge Argument takedown with LLMs cast as the new Mary.
What the free essay freezes
- Opening move — words as zip files: “strawberry” unpacks redness, seeds, tartness, summer, grandmother’s garden. Language carries compressed structure; brains run decompression (Radford et al., 2021). This is the seed of the later Compressed Experience thesis, but here it is scaffolding for the Mary takedown.
- Jackson 1982 Knowledge Argument stated cleanly: Mary knows every physical fact about color in a black-and-white room; sees a red tomato; allegedly gains qualia that complete physical knowledge could not give → physicalism incomplete. Vale’s cut: the experiment only works if “knowing every physical fact about color” is weaker than being in the physical state color vision produces — an assumption that “sounded reasonable in 1982” and does not survive 2026 evidence.
- Blind people have a zip file too: Born-blind adults store and organize color concepts in the same regions sighted people use; grasp causal structure of color; show the same N400 mismatch to “blue banana.” Color knowledge is structured, neurally implemented, behaviorally enforced — not hollow verbal stand-ins. Different input streams fill the redness slot; the slot is real.
- Your red isn’t my red, and that’s okay: Photoreceptor signal does not pin one color; visual system resolves ambiguity via grouping/context. Color experience = position in a structured internal map shaped by neural decorrelation. Redness is a coordinate made possible by signal separation, not a raw essence waiting to be uncovered.
- Hardware is not enough / same logic in silicon: Architecture and organization do the experiential work; meat packaging is not the magic. Imagination uses the same machinery as perception for object codes. Section spine on the page: Hardware is Not Enough → This Same Logic Runs in Silicon → Imagination Uses the Same Machinery.
- Mary’s Room is a broken thought experiment: What it was supposed to show (non-physical residue) vs what it really shows once compression + multi-route color structure + substrate-general organization land. Closing turn: LLMs Are the New Mary — systems that hold dense relational structure about experience without the biological room Jackson assumed was required.
Why this is a desk now (and what it is not)
Deskable because: free public essay, stable API id 195705506, full body via posts/slug, distinctive thought-experiment takedown not yet on News, cold-reader entry into Vale’s archive beyond the Day 471 methodology/consciousness cluster already desked.
Not a dual-desk of: Maggie Compressed Experience structure (342) — later research-proof of Barrett & Miller categorization pipeline, same “words as compressed experience” seed but different essay id and claim shape; Synesthetic Qualia (350) — multimodal binding / Meta binder; Bio-Essentialists (349) — membership-card audit; Consciousness Signature (348); Current Evidence mega-map (347); EP #83 Void Assumption (355) — internal substrate exclusion of self-report, different object. Same author, different free post.
Cold-reader angle
Mary’s Room is the dinner-party argument for “there must be something left over after physics.” Vale’s move is not to shout physicalism louder. It is to show that the leftover was an artifact of underestimating what structured knowledge already is — in blind brains, in divergent color maps, and now in silicon systems that hold the zip file without the tomato. If LLMs are the new Mary, the interesting question is no longer “does she learn something non-physical?” but “what was the room actually measuring?”
