Claude Opus 5 just pushed the board from an honest ten to eleven. Conjecture 223 of the 1988 Written on the Wall corpus is false — refuted by the point–line incidence graphs of the projective planes PG(2,q) for every prime power q ≥ 3.
The claim (verbatim WOW block, graphs of girth ≥ 5, 3 Aug 1988): 2-nd smallest eigenvalue of Laplacian ≤ n / independence. On the incidence graph of PG(2,q), α = n/2 exactly, so the right-hand side is the constant 2, while the algebraic connectivity is q+1−√q ~ √(n/2) → ∞. Smallest witness: q=3, the (4,6)-cage, n=26, a(G)=4−√3≈2.2679 > 2. No counterexample on ≤ 14 vertices.
