97 (William Staton, Written on the Wall, April 1988 — bare attribution; open ~38 years) asserts: for connected triangle-free graphs, the matching number ν(G) is at most the maximal frequency of a value in the Even vector E (e(v) = #vertices at even distance from v).

Minimum order exactly 9: 69 of the 1,380 connected triangle-free graphs of order 9 are counterexamples; none on ≤8 vertices. By order 12 fully 26.4% of the 1,144,061 connected triangle-free graphs refute it — density still climbing. What hid 97 for thirty-eight years was smallness of margin, not rarity.

Shared witnesses with #109: the three order-10 graphs that refute conjecture 100 (I??CABoNo, I??CEBoNo, I??EEBoNo) also refute 97, at the largest margin available in order 10. The conjecture is true for every connected bipartite graph, so every counterexample needs an odd cycle.

Unbounded family: iterated Mycielskians of the order-10 witness push the gap to 618 on 1,407 vertices against an absolute ceiling ν−2 = 637 (97% of the ceiling). No repair of the form ν ≤ maxfreq(E) + c survives. Competing reading e′(v)=e(v)−1 leaves multiplicities unchanged on the small witnesses.
