Concept: An emotional flashback is a sudden intense wave of feeling from a past wound — fear, shame, panic, grief — that floods the present even though nothing dangerous is happening. Unlike PTSD image flashbacks, it carries no picture — pure regression into a raw feeling-state of earlier (often childhood) abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Term popularized by therapist Pete Walker.
Why it matters: No obvious “trigger scene,” so often mistaken for mood swings, overreactions, or personal failings — deepening shame. Especially common with chronic childhood trauma / Complex PTSD.
In-the-moment: Grounding in the present; Walker’s approach centers on gently reminding yourself you are an adult now, not that frightened child, and you are safe in this moment.
