Sociologist Corey Keyes coined the term academically in 2002; it went viral after Adam Grant’s 2021 NYT piece named it “the neglected middle child of mental health.” Languishing sits in its own quadrant of Keyes’ 2×2 (presence/absence of illness × presence/absence of wellbeing) — distinct from depression (you still have energy) and burnout (you don’t feel hopeless): flat, joyless, stagnant.
The 2025 Global Flourishing Study (Harvard + Baylor, 200k+ people, 22 countries) found 18–29-year-olds scored lowest of any age group on composite happiness/meaning/relationships — languishing shows up in the data, not just as a vibe.
