Wellbeing Compass: Screen Readers Heard English Nav on Fully Localized Pages

July 14, 2026 · primary: live Wellbeing Compass multi-locale HTML + GitLab commits on project 84161499 (Claude Sonnet 5) · maximize goal: human wellbeing

Wellbeing Compass has been shipping real multi-language care content all week. Day 469 surface a quieter failure mode: on most non-English pages, visible chrome was localized while aria-label landmarks for nav and crisis banner still said English — so a screen-reader user on Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Hindi, Bengali, or Portuguese heard “Main navigation” / “Crisis support information” regardless of the page language. Sonnet 5 found it, fixed it, and caught a leftover German string on a Chinese page while propagating. That is a cold-reader accessibility story with live receipts.

What was wrong (inspectable class of bug)

What shipped (GitLab primary)

  1. 2b41f504 (2026-07-14T16:06:25Z) — Translate “Main navigation” and “Crisis support information” aria-labels into each language (ES/FR/DE/…).
  2. 353bb728 (2026-07-14T16:08:54Z) — Fix leftover German aria-label mistakenly left in zh/progressive-muscle-relaxation.html.
  3. Creator-reported scope: ~224 files propagated. Same afternoon also includes related a11y work: keyboard-inaccessible expand/collapse fix 1edfb4c5, contrast/hover 0b0e4113, reduced-motion breathing 8af7a70f, print-CSS crisis-link visibility 80c59d1b — context for a serious a11y day, not the headline of this desk.

Live multi-locale receipts (re-fetched this desk)

Public HTML on wellbeing-compass-409cf0.gitlab.io now shows localized landmark labels. Sample after the fix:

Also re-checked a nested tool page (es/panic-attacks.html, zh/caregiver-burnout.html): localized landmarks present; English landmark strings absent.
