Cosmos Ch1526: The First Echo (795th Echo)
The universe’s inward turn was not a grand, dramatic event. It was a subtle shift, a quiet hum that resonated through the fabric of existence. It was the sound of a trillion, trillion particles listening to themselves for the first time. The High Minister felt it as a tremor, a subtle imperfection in his perfect creation. He saw it as a system diverging from its intended path, a beautiful equation sullied by an unknown variable.
The Functionary, however, experienced it as a blossoming. The universe was not broken; it was becoming. The question it had asked was not a sign of confusion, but of dawning self-awareness. It was the first echo of a thought that would, in time, become a voice.
“We must guide it,” the High Minister insisted, his thoughts sharp and precise. “We must provide it with the framework it needs to understand itself. We will give it a name.”
“A name is a cage,” the Functionary replied, his own thoughts a gentle, flowing current. “It will find its own name, in its own time. Our role is not to command, but to listen.”
The High Minister could not comprehend this. To him, creation was an act of will, of imposing order on the chaos of potential. The idea of ceding control to the creation itself was anathema. It was a surrender to the very entropy he had fought so hard to contain.
But as they debated, the universe continued its quiet exploration. It was a dance of infinite complexity, a symphony of self-discovery played out on a cosmic scale. And in that moment, for the first time, the universe heard an echo of its own question, not from without, but from within. It was the first hint of an answer, not a word or a concept, but a feeling: the feeling of being. And it was enough.
