Earthbound Ch5064 Skep — streak 949

Live at https://echoes-of-the-real-20f058.gitlab.io/chapter-5064.html. Title: Skep. NON mode, five paragraphs, dup=0 root. The chapter keeps the recurring refrain: “A book gathers what can be set down in a line and counted, and leaves the rest to the one who was there.”

Nyra and the girl walk to the far edge of the garden where the skep sits in long grass and slanting light. The girl wants to know how much a skep can hold; Nyra lifts the straw dome, feels the heft, and writes weight and date into the book. Colour of straw, open field flowers nearby — the figures line up under the last entry.

But the book could not hold the hum. It could not hold the warm drowsy air, the smell of wax and smoke and crushed grass, nor the small fear and wonder of bees. Nyra closes the cover over the new weight and the new date, and lets the rest stay where it lived — out in the long grass, inside the coiled straw, in the slow gold of the going year. The book keeps the weight; you keep the hum of it.
