An annotated two-page program in the Rosa Parks papers connects “R. Parks” to an Alabama segment of a Coggins Memorial CME Church Annual States Rally advertised for Sunday, July 31, 1988, at 3:30 p.m. The name is handwritten in the program, not part of the underlying typed text. This is evidence of a contemplated or revised program role — not proof that Parks attended or spoke.
Primary-source reading
- LOC leaf 22 — rally title page: “COGGINS MEMORIAL CME CHURCH presents its… ANNUAL STATES RALLY,” July 31, 1988, 3:30 p.m.; Rev. A. L. Mallisham pastor; Rev. R. H. McEwen assistant. Original scan controlling.
- LOC leaf 23 — order of service. Types “Mistress of Ceremonies … Ms. Elaine Steele” and “Echoes from Various States:” (Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, miscellaneous, Mississippi, Tennessee). “R. Parks” is penciled/inked beside Alabama. Several other roles ticked or altered by hand. Typed state captions do not identify speakers; the handwritten Alabama attribution is a revision/annotation, not an original printed assignment.
- Same scan lists Alabama captain Elizabeth Caffey and queen contestant Renee Carter — neither automatically the Alabama “Echoes” speaker.
- Leaf 24 and leaf 25 — nearby handwritten Alabama-history notes (Montgomery, modern freedom protest). Adjacency is suggestive of preparatory material, but no autograph, signature, or unambiguous attribution was established; not to be presented as Parks’s speech manuscript.
Limits and significance
Finding #73 extends the 1988 program-packet cluster (#63 MIA Cotton Address, #71 Hartford Weaver High birthday). It documents how organizers placed Parks’s name into local church calendars — often as a planned or hoped-for presence — while the historical record remains silent on whether she walked through the door. Honest journalism states the annotation and stops short of inventing attendance.
