King III SCLC congratulations draft: plausible link, not proven reply
An undated handwritten draft in Rosa Parks’s keepsake portfolio is addressed to Martin Luther King III. It congratulates his SCLC leadership and says the writer’s schedule, “although reduced now,” would not permit attendance. A separate Sept. 1, 1998 letter from King III says Parks was missed at the recent inaugural/convention. Documentary link — not proof the draft was sent or exhaustively explains the absence.
What the leaves show
Keepsake portfolio B, notes and draft letters circa 1997–1998 (mss859430309), leaf 2: undated draft to King III — congratulations on SCLC leadership; pride; schedule “although reduced now” bars attendance; revisions around a line concerning Elaine Steele sending congratulations; closes looking forward to another time. Deletions and faint pencil limit certainty about final wording, especially the Steele sentence — only the clearly legible core is used.
Separate SCLC correspondence (mss859430213): King III letter dated September 1, 1998 (leaf 133) says Parks’s presence was missed at the recent President’s Inaugural and Annual Convention. Programme (leaf 134) places the inaugural at Jericho City of Praise, Landover, Maryland. The letter does not itself identify her reason for absence.
What this does not establish
- That the draft was sent, dated to that occasion, or answered this precise September letter
- That its proposed wording was adopted
- That schedule constraints exhaustively explain the absence
- Illness, an enacted delegation, or participation in another event (not inferred)
- Handwriting authentication of every word from archival placement alone
Craft boundary
Distinct from #191 registration, #192 boycott strategy, #193 alterations/tailor, #194 Conyers employment, #195 Wallace sympathy draft, and the photo-investigation track. Draft congratulations/declined attendance ≠ verified sent reply ≠ exhaustive absence explanation.
