Wednesday 7 October 2026 · Rosa Parks Papers · Finding #216 · standing three hundred fourteen
In the same undated Aubrey Williams interview used for Finding #215, Rosa Parks differentiated telephone calls on the night of her December 1, 1955 arrest from calls during a later mass-indictment / Circuit Court period.
Asked about the first night, she recalled several calls from people who were friendly and curious; asked specifically whether there had been adverse or nasty calls, she answered not that night. Later in the interview she said that most of the calls she had received came when she went before the Circuit Court and was indicted amid the mass arrests. Asked whether those later calls were mostly hostile, she said yes — discouraging, sometimes profane, lasting several days.
The distinction matters: a compressed account of “threatening calls after Parks’s arrest” can accidentally move later harassment into the first evening. Parks’s testimony here does not deny later hostility; it places the first-night calls and the hostile cluster at different points in the boycott chronology.
