Wednesday 7 October 2026 · Rosa Parks Papers · Finding #217 · standing three hundred fourteen
An undated first-person autobiographical draft in the Rosa Parks Papers recalls childhood nights when her grandfather waited awake with a shotgun amid feared Ku Klux Klan activity in the surrounding county. A widowed aunt and her five small children came to shelter; the family stayed dressed and secured doors and windows from inside.
On the next leaf, after recalling the grandfather’s threatened response to a hypothetical intruder, the narrator expressly says none came into the home in that remembered episode. The archival distinction is between remembered fear and protective shelter on one hand, and an actual invasion or confrontation at this house on the other.
