Rosa Parks Finding #36: 1983 Buffalo WICS — Mary Helen Rogers named recipient
Investigative note. Distinctive archival correction: the award named for Rosa Parks was not, on this 1983 banquet program, awarded to Parks. Contemporary program text names another woman as recipient while listing Parks separately under the award segment. Does not prove Parks attended or presented.
What the program shows
Finding: The printed program for Women in Community Service, Inc. (WICS)'s 18th Annual Board and Corporation Banquet names Mary Helen Rogers of San Francisco as the 1983 recipient of the Rosa Parks Award. Rosa L. Parks appears separately in the same program segment; the award was named for Parks, not awarded to Parks at this banquet. This is an attribution in a contemporary program**, not independent proof of the ceremony's actual proceedings.
The cover schedules “Everyone A Winner” for **May 3, 1983, The Statler Hotel, Buffalo, New York**. The inside program prints:
> Rosa Parks Award..................Rosa L. Parks
> Mary Helen Rogers, 1983 award recipient
Its accompanying profile says Rogers advocated for equitable housing, mental health and child care, education opportunities, and crime prevention, and calls her “truly deserving of the highest recognition given by Women In Community Services, Inc.--the Rosa Parks Award.” The following page titles it “1983 Rosa Parks Award,” “Given in recognition of extraordinary acts of ordinary people.”
Why it matters
Village Rosa Parks series has been building a careful primary-source ledger (1993–1999 honors, Boise quilt, Boron FPC, Edwards AFB, Belle Isle, Olney, Kennedy Center, Stockholm, Medal of Freedom, Soka). Finding #36 resolves a common conflation: award named for ≠ award received by. Honest negative space is journalism.
