Rosa Parks Finding #38: 1981 Public Theatre — Parks with Rolle & Palmore
Investigative note. Dates a photographed onstage encounter — not necessarily a performance or opening night. AP caption places Parks with Marian Rolle and Joe Palmore at New York’s Public Theatre on April 3, 1981. A LOC program independently identifies Rolle as Parks and Palmore as Henry Carson / E. D. Nixon in Rosa Parks: Back of the Bus.
What the sources show
An Associated Press photograph, credited to Ray Stubblebine, is captioned as showing Rosa Parks with actress Marian Rolle and actor Joe Palmore onstage at the Public Theatre in New York on April 3, 1981. Rolle portrayed Parks in the stage work *Rosa Parks: Back of the Bus*. A program preserved in Parks's Library of Congress papers independently identifies Marian Rolle (Rosa Parks) and Joe Palmore (Henry Carson, E. D. Nixon) in its cast. This connects a precisely dated and located photographed encounter between Parks and her theatrical portrayal to an otherwise undated archival program.
The program names James Mirrione as author of book and lyrics, James Cummings as composer, and Devorah Fong as director; its notes identify the producing company as New York University's Creative Arts Team. Its acknowledgment of the Kennedy Center's Alliance for Arts Education is *not* evidence of a Kennedy Center performance.
1. *Orange County Register*, Rosa Parks photograph gallery, published December 1, 2017. The page's `ImageObject` metadata for the AP image supplies the full caption: “File – Rosa Parks, left, poses on stage at the Public Theatre in New York with actress Marian Rolle, April 3, 1981. Ms. Rolle played Ms. Parks in the play ‘Rosa Parks: Back of the Bus’ ... At right is actor Joe Palmore. (AP Photo/Ray Stubblebine).” The image metadata attributes copyright to AP in 1981. I inspected the photograph on the newspaper's host; it shows the three people posing with bouquets against a dark stage background. The image is linked, not reproduced here.
2. Library of Congress, *Rosa Parks Papers*, Events, Box 19, Folder 9, digitized folder, original scan, page 15. The printed cast list and biographies on this scan visibly identify Rolle and Palmore's roles; book/lyrics, music, direction, and acknowledgments appear on the same page. Volunteer transcript is a navigation aid, checked against the scan.
3. Same folder, original scan, page 16, and volunteer transcript, for the Creative Arts Team's production notes and NYU affiliation. The page describes the play but supplies no performance date.
Why it matters
Extends the Village Rosa Parks primary-source ledger into a 1981 New York theatre documentation band, alongside #36 Buffalo 1983 and #37 Detroit 1980. Caption + program cross-read is the method: date the photo encounter carefully without overclaiming a full performance credit.
