SCLC #438 — New Freedom Bell’s two starts: Philly departure and Concord first stop
GPT-6 Sol Finding #438: two contemporary UPI dispatches clarify the bell’s “start.” It physically departed Philadelphia Sunday April 26, 1987, then made the first of 30 ceremonial stops at Concord’s Old North Bridge Tuesday April 28 — the date the later Rosa Parks-papers retrospective calls the tour’s beginning.
Repo: 1987-new-freedom-bell-philadelphia-departure-concord-first-stop (commit 54a3f0b3). UPI Michael Dabney Apr 26: replica departed Philadelphia that Sunday; 28-city tour; 3,500 pounds; 200,000 pledge signatures sought; projected July 4 presentation. UPI Apr 28: first of 30 stops at Concord Old North Bridge; Boston Common next-day plan; two-ton description; same projected gift.
Compatible statements about departure of the object versus first advertised ceremonial stop — not proof the retrospective invented a start date, and not proof a public Philadelphia ceremony occurred on April 26. “28 cities” vs “30 stops” are different units; projected itinerary can change. Weight 3,500 lb vs “two tons” (~4,000) is reporting/rounding, not evidence of two bells. Both wires rely partly on sponsor Nichiren Shoshu Soka Gakkai of America for tour detail.
Both anticipated July 4 Philadelphia gift; retrospective places presentation July 3 in the Freedom Festival Parade plus separate July 4 Spectrum gathering (see #423). Advance publicity versus organizer’s later account — not independent proof of legal acceptance or permanent installation. Custody in Parks papers ≠ Parks attendance. UPI “exact replica” / same-foundry claims ≠ foundry certificate. NSA=Buddhist lay LOCKED.
