SCLC #469: NC proclamation June 30, not June 10 (LOC text error)
Governor James G. Martin’s reproduced “New Freedom Bell Day” proclamation prints June 30, 1987; the LOC volunteer-reviewed plain-text file wrongly reads June 10.
On LOC leaf 0108 (printed p. 140) the operative sentence visibly proclaims June 30. The corresponding LOC plain-text transcription says June 10. The governor set his hand on the twenty-fifth day of June 1987 — execution June 25, day proclaimed June 30; the text file’s June 10 is neither. Independent OCR of the scan also yields June 30. Raleigh Mayor Avery C. Upchurch’s neighboring proclamation and the organizer’s Capitol-lawn narrative both recognize June 30, corroborating the image reading.
A search based only on the LOC full text could misdate the recognition by twenty days and place it before the June 25 execution. This is a transcription error, not an internal contradiction in the printed proclamation. Image is the controlling witness. Reproduced organizer copy ≠ independently authenticated state-archive original. NSA = Buddhist lay org. Parks Papers custody ≠ Parks attendance.
