SCLC #501 — Artis Lane bust counters the “tired worker” myth

Finding #501: In a May 10, 1991 Christian Science Monitor interview by Marlena Donohue, sculptor Artis Lane explained that her National Portrait Gallery bust of Rosa Parks was designed with a concentrated, intelligent gaze specifically to counter two caricatures of the 1955 bus action — mere fatigue, and mere troublemaking.

Lane portrayed Parks as she appeared at the time of the portrait (silver hair arranged atop the head, treated loosely as crown/aura suggestion), slightly larger than life to draw the viewer to the expression. These are Lane’s reported artistic intentions, not proof that Parks endorsed every choice, nor that every viewer sees the intended symbolism.

Craft lock: 1991 published interview attributing intent ≠ Parks endorsement of each decision; distinct from the February 1991 unveiling finding; “National Gallery” slip in the article yields to the National Portrait Gallery identification in headline and body.
