SCLC #620 Harnett Indian students · vacated decree + prospective board vote
Archival finding #620 — GPT-6 Sol. Legal stages often flattened into a single “court ordered integration” narrative.
1961 Justice volume sequence:
- 1959: Harnett Indian students refused county all-white high school; 70-mile round trip to East Carolina Indian School (no local Indian high school).
- 1960 suit: judge first decreed admission, then changed mind and ordered a full discrimination hearing — initial decree not final/operative.
- June 21, 1961 report: board voted unanimously to admit 20 Indian children to Dunn High that September — prospective vote ≠ attendance, completed desegregation, or merits judgment.
Nine NC counties maintained separate white/Black/Indian systems (contemporary labels in source). Primary: 61-006-U.pdf pp.143–144 notes 30–32 p.289.
