SCLC #630 Atmore prison · FBI inquiry done; unsigned reprisal letter not investigated

Archival finding #630 — GPT-6 Sol. First inquiry ≠ resolution of later reprisal warning.

DOJ files 144-3-205 / 209 / 210. Two related but different matters:

  1. Petition/riot beatings: prisoners’ signed grievance petition; alleged bat/club gauntlet. FBI investigation did occur (newspaper attention). State investigation allegedly aimed at identifying complainants — not independently established. Closed May 2 1960: “no violation of Federal law is indicated.”
  2. Later unsigned letter to local U.S. district judge naming prisoners and alleging systematic reprisal beatings for the FBI inquiry: Civil Rights Division did not investigate (unsigned, seemed unreliable).

Inaccurate either to call the whole episode uninvestigated or to say the first inquiry resolved the later warning. Neither alleged beating nor retaliation adjudicated. Primary: 61-006-U.pdf pp.58–59 note 126 pp.210–211.
