SCLC #644 · Two 1957 Birmingham mob attacks, two outcomes
Police did not arrest Lamar Weaver’s attackers after the March railway-station assault, but fined him $25 plus costs for a red light while escaping. In September, officers rescued Rev. Shuttlesworth and arrested three suspects in his schoolyard beating, though the grand jury declined to indict. The first attack relies on a confidential eyewitness; the second no-bill on a cited newspaper. Neither establishes collusion as a court finding.
