SCLC #648 · James LaFleur (Blackfoot, Idaho 1959): §242 conviction with suspended custody
James LaFleur, a Canadian-born Cree man, was taken by Blackfoot, Idaho officers to the city limits rather than jail in 1959 and beaten; fellow officers testified against Clark, who was federally convicted under §242. His $500 fine and 60-day sentence carried suspended custody, not proof of time served; the Commission did not find racial identity a major motive. A cross-check also catches the report’s “D. Ia.” district abbreviation in its six-case list despite the Idaho narrative; #632 has been amended accordingly.
